Market Notes for August 30
First up, look for a nice article and photos about Henry’s Farm in the Chicago Sun Times tomorrow. Or read the story here. The writer Stefano Esposito, and the photographer Pat Nabong, both did a great job, and the weather last Friday cooperated, providing a misty and mysterious mood to the morning.
Speaking of morning . . .
Be sure to get to the market EARLY this Saturday. Henry will be wrapping up and put things away at 11am in order to leave the market by noon — in order to get back home for the Memorial Tree Walk for our dad. We appreciate you getting out of bed early so Henry can get home early!
It’s another great week for Okra and Edamame, so stock up on these summer favorites!
Last Week for Melons!
First Fall Greens — Great in Salads, Stir-fries, Soups, and Sautees!
The Savanna, or “Slick,” Mustard Greens have a great flavor, are tender and not as pungent as curly mustard. Henry said they taste great — more like his favorite choi Komatsu-na than mustard greens. So if you like choi, you’ll love Henry’s Slick Mustard Greens.
The feathery Green Mizuna is equally good raw in salads, or briefly cooked in soups, stir-fries, etc.
ARUGULA is back, too, so make yourself a delicious fall salad with any — or all! — of the fall greens.
Eat on the Wild Side with Purslane and Amaranth
Wild greens are much more nutritious than their domesticated cousins, so get a big bunch of purslane like those that Henry’s washing above, and toss in with your fall greens — or with a cucumber salad, potato salad, egg salad, or any salad or stir-fry.
