CSA #13 (8/19/2025)

Just for fun, here’s one from the archives: Henry and Sora shucking sweet corn some 30 years ago. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose, as we are in sweet corn season once again and Henry’s out harvesting sweet corn until dark.

Before we get to this week’s vegetables, if you haven’t ordered Teresa’s organic APPLES and/or ARONIA yet, you still have time. PLUS, she’s added more half-bushels of seconds so you can choose between Pristine seconds, or the Mixed seconds (4 varieties) — or get a half-bushel of each!

The tomatoes are delicious, and coming on stronger each week!

In Your CSA

  • Potatoes

  • Tomatoes

  • Cucumbers

  • Purslane - This wild green thrives in the summer heat that kills spinach, lettuce, and most other domesticated greens. It has a nice crunch and a light, lemony taste. Chop into short lengths and toss with yogurt or any salad dressing. Or saute with eggs or vegetables.

  • Choice of Basil or Shiso

  • Melons, and if there’s not enough for everyone, some groups will get the first Spaghetti Squash of the season

  • Chowder Corn, which is what we call slightly over-mature sweet corn. Because it’s a little starchier, it’s great for soups and our family favorite is Corn Cheese Chowder, which everyone loves, specially children.

Food Notes: Chowder Corn

Corn Cheese Chowder

4 Tb (1/2 Stick) Butter

1 whole Onion, chopped

3 slices Bacon, cut into pieces (optional)

3 whole Bell Peppers, finely diced (optional)

5 ears Corn (or more), boiled and then kernels sliced off

1/4 c. Flour

3 c. Chicken or vegetable stock

2 c. Half-and-half or Milk

1 c. Grated Monterey Jack

1 c. Grated Pepper Jack (or Cheddar, or whatever cheese you have handy)

1/3 c. sliced scallions, chives, or parsley

  • In a large pot, melt the butter over medium-high heat. Cook the onions for a few minutes, until soft. Add the bacon and cook for another minute or so, then add the bell peppers and cook for another couple of minutes. Finally, add the corn and cook for a minute.

  • Sprinkle flour evenly over the top of the vegetables and stir to combine. Pour in the stock and stir well. Continue stirring for 3 or 4 minutes until the soup thickens, then reduce heat to low. Stir in the half-and-half or milk, then cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes.

  • Stir in the cheeses and scallions, chives, or parsley. When cheese is melted, check seasonings and add salt and pepper as needed.

Yes, you can still order Teresa’s Amazing Apples for delivery tomorrow!

Get a Half-Bushel of Mixed Seconds and/or Quarts of Pristine Apple Firsts!

You will pick up your apples at your usual CSA time and place Tuesday, Aug. 19, except for the Eureka pick-up, which will NOT be at Laura’s home, but rather at Teresa’s garage, 302 W. Sunny Lane.

NOTE: If the half-bushels are sold out, please email Teresa letting her know you would like one. She will contact you if she is able to fill your order.
