Click here for this week’s Food & Farm Notes – with all the content you know and love . . . plus photos and more!

The past few weeks, we've been gradually transitioning to online Food & Farm Notes, and have heard many comments, such as:
  • I love the photos of the fields, and the fruits and vegetables
  • I don’t have to scroll through the whole long email to get to what I want
  • I like the easy access to this week’s recipes, and all the past recipes too
  • I can comment, ask questions, or tweak a recipe and share it
So if you haven’t clicked over yet, this is the week to check it out. Once you’re there, simply click on the left side bar items to bounce back and forth from e.g. Farm Notes to the featured vegetable or herb (amaranth and nepitella this week) to recipes.

Then scroll over the narrow right sidebar to search the different Content Categories, the different authors, follow our blog and/or sign up for an RSS feed. You can also use the search box in the upper right hand corner to find anything that’s on the site about Gooseberries (for example).

To whet your appetite, here’s a preview of what’s in the Notes and what’s coming up to market this week:

Farm Notes by Aozora Brockman (Simmering Sun; Glorious Naps) and Teresa Brockman (Battling the Beetles and the Heat)

At Henry's Vegetable Stand
FeaturingAmaranth, an ancient and much-esteemed green around the world.  Now that the spinach season is over (until cool weather returns this fall), and the lamb’s quarters are fading, we are blessed with delicious and nutritious amaranth greens.   If you haven’t yet tried them, this is the week to do so, and there’s no better way to prepare a mess of greens than in a wonderful Greens Pie

Last Chance for: Escarole, Endive, Frisee, Lamb’s Quarters, Chois, Wild Arugula, Radish, Sugar Snap and Snow Peas

Nearing the End: Kohlrabi, Broccoli, Lettuces. You’ll see lots of lettuces this week, but don’t be fooled into complacency – we’ve cleaned out the spring plantings this week, and there won’t be much at all coming from the summer plantings.

First (or nearly first) of: Eggplants (Italian and Japanese), Tomatoes

Coming on Strong: potatoes, cabbages, carrots, tomatoes

At Teresa’s Fruit & Herb Stand
The herbs still look and taste great since we have been watering through the drought, moving hoses a few times each day to give everything a drink each week.  This 4th of July, be a true American--adventurous and innovative--and try an herb that you have ever tasted before! For your picnic or family gathering, how about the Italian mint, nepitella on some mushrooms, orange thyme in a salad dressing, winter savory and lemon thyme on your grilled chicken, or cutting celery in your potato salad?

And don’t forget the drinks! Make mint mojitos with true Cuban mojito mint or choose another of our mints. And make a big batch of iced herbal tea using our fresh herbs or our pre-packaged herb teas.

We will have more red raspberries this week, but the heat is cooking many of them right on the canes, so this will likely be the last good week for them. Get them while the getting’s good!

Earlybirds at the market will see a few other fruits, but there are slim pickings this week . . .  which makes them all the more precious.

See you soon!
